The world of classic Hollywood has been shaken by the death of Patty Duke.
She was a beloved and prolific actress, having won an Oscar for playing Helen Keller at the age of 16 in The Miracle Worker (1962), had a successful TV show, had two Top 40 hits in the 60s, became President of the Screen Actors Guild and was one of the first celebrities to speak out about mental health issues, after she was diagnosed as being manic-depressive. She wrote a book about it, became an activist and was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from both the University of North Florida and the University of Maryland for her work. An impressive life, to say the least.
