It’s Billy Wilder’s birthday! Woohoo! The thing is, I don’t know what to say about Billy Wilder anymore. I’ve gushed about him so much over the years, I honestly can’t think of anything else to say. You know I’m obsessed with The Apartment (1960), that I consider Some Like it Hot (1959) to be comedy perfection, and that Double Indemnity (1944) is my favorite noir. Not to mention I can do a spot-on impression of Norma Desmond. Well, ‘spot-on’ might be an exaggeration. But yeah, Billy Wilder is one of my biggest idols and the reason why I decided to become a screenwriter. I love and double-love Billy Wilder.
So, all that’s left for me to say is thank you. Thank you for everything, Mr Wilder, and I hope you’re having a wonderful birthday in Hollywood Heaven.
Fantastic director – you almost have to admire his courage for making a film as brutally honest about the movie industry as Sunset Boulevard. I’ve recently picked up The Lost Weekend which I will have to watch soon…

Yes!!
The Lost Weekend is painful, but brilliant. Ray Milland was fantastic.

One of the best directors there has ever been. His films are timeless. He was a director who always got the best performances from the cast.

A cinematic genius! Recently on TCM David Letterman chose The Lost Weekend as his favorite movie and Wilder his fave director.

Truly a genius and such a gift to the world of film. One of my favourite directors. If his films are not part of any film class on classic film, get out of that class! It’s not worth your time. Billy Wilder is a true master.

I finally watched The Apartment. For years I have heard about this film, but never knew what it was about. It certainly was not what I was expecting. Overall I really enjoyed the movie, although it was a bit too long.
